FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The West Valley Wolfpack football program delivered a signed petition to the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Superintendent Karen Gaborik.
The players were petitioning to reinstate the assistant coaches who were let go after the swimming incident at UAF last month.
West Valley has been using temporary assistant coaches assembled by the school's administration around acting Head Coach Norm Davis.
“I still feel like we can do more and I still feel like we need to get these coaches,” said West Valley’s Malachi Brooks at the School District building. “That’s it, we really need to get these coaches back and we are not going to stop until we get our assistant coaches and our JV coaches back.”
The football team is picking up the pieces after three students were hospitalized in late July. Roy Hessner, who was the head coach at the time, resigned the day after the swimming incident.
“It’s like a brotherhood," said Brooks about the players coming together. "These are my brothers right here. Our coaches are part of that family too. We really want our assistant coaches and JV coaches back so the brotherhood can be complete.”
The Wolfpack start their season Friday against the Wasilla Warriors.
