FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) After a week which saw the Alaska Nanooks volleyball program get to a 4-0 start in the conference, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference gave two awards to the Blue and Gold.
The Nanooks were recognized as the GNAC Team of the Week. They earned that distinction after beating the Anchorage Seawolves and the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets last week. Against the Seawolves, they bounced back from an early deficit to win 3-1, while against MSUB the Nooks used late game heroics to get the 3-2 win.
One of the players that led Alaska was their junior Cate Whiting. Whiting was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week, putting up some unreal numbers. She accumulated 77 assists, 11 kills, and 8 aces over the two games. She was also named the American Volleyball Coaches Association D-II Player of the Week. This was the second time she was honored by them in her career.
The Nanooks now prepare for their Thursday night game against the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks. This game is at 7 P.M. on Thursday at the Patty Center.
