FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The UAF men's basketball team continued their road trip through the Golden State with the Cal State Monterey Bay Invite this weekend.

The Nanooks struggled to slow down Cal State Monterey Bay's offense, falling 96-67. Spencer Sweet led the Nanooks offensively with 14 points, including connecting on three shots from beyond the arc. Shadeed Shabazz was the only other Nanook in double figures with 10 points. Newcomer Mawich Kachjaani provided 9 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Otters were lethal from deep, drilling 13 three-pointers in the victory. The Nanooks shot just 37.5% from the field, while CSUMB went 37-69 from the floor for 53.6%

The Nanooks had another crack at a victory when they faced Cal State San Marcos on Saturday. Sweet anchored the scoring once again, pouring in 16 points, including a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give the Nanooks the lead heading into the locker rooms. However, it was the second half push from the Cougars, as they pulled away with a 88-75 victory. Markel Banks added 13 points for the Nanooks in the losing effort. It was a tale of two halves, as UAF shot 50% from the field in the first. But it was San Marcos taking control in the second, when they went on a 16-0 run early, which was too much for the Nanooks to overcome. With the loss, UAF gave up 184 points on the weekend, something they hope to turn around as the schedule continues. They bring their 1-3 record to Salt Lake City, Utah next weekend for the Westminster Invite. They take on the Griffins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, before facing Dixie State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
