UAF Athletic Dept. looking for their new 'Nook'

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Alaska Nanooks Athletic Department is in search of someone to take over as the mascot, the one and only Nook.

"I would say we are looking for somebody that is going to represent the Alaska Nanooks super well at all of our home games,” said UAF Community Engagement Coord. Lisa Laiti. “Hopefully someone that can engage the fans and create some great experiences at all of the games."

Down at the Patty Center one man showed up to present what he could do. That man is Jason McKee, a student at UAF. This Nook definitely had some moves.

The mascot is a beloved symbol in sports, from the West Virginia Mountaineer to the Big Red in Western Kentucky University, it all comes down to school spirit.

"I want to bring spirit to my school and it's always been a dream of mine and be the school mascot,” said UAF student Jason McKee. “I ask every year like, 'who’s the school's mascot this year?’ but this year I saw the flier and I said yeah I'm going out. I love sports, I love the game and I love my school so just wanting to see people happy and pumped up."

The first home game at the Patty Center is for the Nanooks volleyball program on Tuesday September 24. The Nanooks face the Anchorage Seawolves.
