FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The University of Alaska Athletic Department last Friday announced the fifth and final member of the 20-18 Hall of Fame Class, adding the 2002 to 2003 Alaska Nanooks Men's basketball program.
That season was a special one for the program, as not only did they capture some big wins, they also caught the adoration of the fans here in Fairbanks.
They had a rising star in Brad Oleson who was beginning to erupt, the roster only had two returners to it, and they overturned their horrible 4 and 23 record the year before to go on an amazing adventure.
And they took over the Top of the World to do the unthinkable.
They won the Top of the World Classic, captured the regular season title with Humboldt State by going 20 and 8 and 13 and 5 in conference play.
The players being inducted with the team is Justin Bourne, Zac Forsyth, Ryan Jones, Arnold Marks, Ivan Miskovic, Brad Oleson, Marquis Revels, Jocquis Scorniers, Andrew Smith, Chris Smith, Zach Tilbury, Steve Towne, and Jason Williams.
They were coached by Al Sokaitis and Frank Ostanik.
When the Nooks took down Weber State in the Top of the World Classic Championship, Oleson was named the Tournament MVP, also Williams and Towne were named to the all-tournament team.
To celebrate, the Nanooks jumped into the back of a truck and rode the streets in celebration in -20 degree weather.
The induction ceremony will be in September.
