FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A blast from the past in the 2019 Run for the Refuge, as the two former Alaska Nanooks took home first in the 5K course.
Both Steian Stensland and Maria Stensland grabbed the gold in both the male and female divisions.
The Stenslands raced for the Nanooks' cross country program in the 90's, and took home first together.
The couple from blue and gold's past spoke about winning the 2019 Refuge run.
"Today it was to get first, Mainly because we had the kids here to cheer us on, so it is fun to be first. It was very warm, I was looking forward to the shade during the run and I was happy I was not running the 10K," said Maria Stensland.
"We have been running on these trails many times. The first time in '97, this is the seventh time we are back here. These trails bring back good memories, but it was really warm and hard, but it is nice to be back. We are here about a week, traveling around Alaska, visiting friends all over the state," said Steian Stensland.
