FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Monroe Catholic Rams volleyball program is on a roll in the Aurora Conference, as the Rams played in a five set thriller against the Hutchison Hawks, and were able to put their foes away in the hotly contested fifth set.
The Rams took the first set 25-19 thanks in large part to their defense from Chloe Maynard.
Maynard had a double-double on the night, leading the way with 25 kills and 10 blocks.
Hutch battled back to take set two 25-22, as Allyonna Mandregan almost willed the Hawks to victory with 14 kills, 10 blocks and five aces.
The third set however was snatched by the Rams, who won it 25-18.
Hutch returned the favor by flexing on Monroe, winning the fourth 25-11.
Then in the fifth, the Rams finally secured the victory winning the final set 15-12.
Madi Leslie and Maddie Muramoto chipped in 10 kills each for Monroe, while Marian Nelson helped on the defensive end with 20 digs.
For Hutch, they had Emily Wayfield lead with 37 assists and Raven Drake had 36 digs.
The Rams improve to 8-0 and face the Valdez Buccaneers next week, while Hutch looks to rebound against the Galena Hawks.
Muramoto spoke after the match about the team's effort and where their goals are at.
"It definitely showed us that where we need to be this season when we need to keep pushing. And we can't just lay off like we are going to win. Like I said, we can't take anything for granted, can't assume that we're just going to win, but I think it's going to be Valdez and us battling for first. I'm still feeling kind of high from it but definitely feel tired. Looking forward to the next game," said Muramoto.
