FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Lathrop Malemutes took home the Monroe Holiday Classic title in the girls' bracket thanks to the in and out game they displayed throughout the tournament.
The Malemutes went head to head against the likes of the Colony Knights, the Monroe Catholic Rams and the Valdez Buccaneers to stand tall at the end of the journey.
Game 1 saw Lathrop take on the Knights, and they walked away with a 52-47 victory against the 4A powerhouse.
Lathrop then faced the Monroe Catholic Rams on Day 2, looking to secure a spot in the finals.
The Rams were coming off a loss to the Bucs, and they came out firing against the Malemutes.
But late in the second half Lathrop found their groove defensively to win 47-35 over the Rams.
Then in the championship game, the Malemutes faced off against the Valdez Buccaneers who have a legit sharpshooter from outside in Reese King.
Lathrop got 13 from Torrin Johnson Oates to help put away the Bucs 58-28.
The Malemutes also shot lights outside from downtown, getting threes from Ella Roberts and Breezy McLain.
Roberts was named the MVP.
Lathrop took home the crowns as they showed they have something to say in the Mid Alaska Conference.
Their next journey is in the West Valley Girls' Basketball Ice Jam, as the field has the East Anchorage Thunderbirds, the ACS Lions, the Valdez Buccaneers, the Bartlett Golden Bears, the Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears, the West Valley Wolfpack and the Eagle River Wolves.
Meanwhile the Monroe Catholic Rams will look to rebound at the Hutchison Hawks tonight.
