FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Hutchison Hawks were in a tight one against the West Valley Wolfpack in some Tuesday night flag football action, and the Hawks climbed the mountain to knock off their next door neighbors.
The Hawks displayed some blazing speed on offense to capture the 25-18 victory on West Valley's field.
Their defense also came up clutch, forcing ill advised throws and routes from the Wolfpack.
The game didn't see the first score until the second quarter when senior Tana Weckwerth took the ball 30 yards for the touchdown.
But right before halftime, the Hawks answered the touchdown with a 65 yard. catch by Kenya Edwards.
Hunter Taylor threw it up there for her junior wide receiver to get a hold of, and Edwards turned on the jets to burn the Wolfpack.
At halftime, Hutch held on to a slim 7-6 lead, but an early interception gave the Wolfpack ample field position to score and take over.
But on a long drive by the Hawks, Lauren Kohntopp scampered 11 yards on her way to pay dirt.
Then the Hawks scored once again with Edwards grabbing the ball with her fingertips on a four yard pass from Taylor.
When West Valley took the field with about two minutes left on the clock, and after a deep catch and run from Sheridan Blasey, the Wolfpack were in position to score and hopefully tie the game.
Blasey caught a 15 yarder from Tessa Lindberg, but on the extra point the young quarterback was sacked to keep it a one point contest.
But the Hawks were able to pull away for good on an 86 yard touchdown run from Kohntopp, dashing the hopes of the Wolfpack.
Edwards talked about getting this victory against West Valley.
"I really did not expect it to come towards me, she told me to run towards the orange cone and I did. As soon as I turned around, I was like there was nobody out there so I just booked it. I think our squad, since we lost a lot of people like we miss them but I feel like we have gotten better as a team. And we work together really well. We have a game coming up on Thursday against Lathrop and we are just taking it game by game while working on everything," said Edwards.
The Hawks take their momentum into a match against the Lathrop Malemutes, while the Wolfpack take on the North Pole Patriots.
