FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks Ice Dogs swept the Janesville Jets over the weekend to extend their lead in the Midwest Division, and they can thank their performance in Game Two for setting up their run.
The Ice Dogs won 8-3 with Luke Mobley scoring a hat trick in front of the home crowd.
Fairbanks was down early after Janesville scored, but they answered back with a power play goal from Noah Wilson.
Then in the second period, Matt Koethe tacked on one while Luke Mobley got his first goal through a power play.
The Jets then scored two goals to make it 3-3, but after a five minute penalty, the Ice Dogs scored two power play goals from Mobley and John Stampohar to give them a two goal lead.
In the third, the Ice Dogs scored three to put the nail in the coffin thanks to Grant Ledford, Brenden MacLaren and Mobley completing the hat trick.
This game also saw numerous fights and multiple players end up in the penalty box.
Luke Mobley spoke after the game about getting the hats to rain down in the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
"Yeah that was awesome it was nice to see 'em go in a lot of credit to my linemates I thought we played pretty well tonight it was nice to see them," said Mobley.
"Honestly pucks were just going in the right direction you know sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don't and I mean tonight was just working for us. I mean it was good I don't score to often as a defenseman so it was nice to put one in and it just felt like it gave me the energy to keep going the rest of the game," said Wilson.
"It was nice it was my first fight and to get the boys going they popped two quickly after so it was very rewarding to see. Yeah, it's nice I'm worried about the text I'm going to get from my mom but yeah it feels good," said Brown.
Game Three was a lot closer as the Ice Dogs sweat out the final few moments to win 3-2 over the Jets.
Luke Ciolli scored the first goal in the opening period, which kickstarted Fairbanks' offense to go up 3-0.
Luke Mobley scored alongside Jax Murray to give the Ice Dogs two goals in the second period.
Janesville made it interesting late in the second period and they scored in the third to make it a one goal game.
But Nate Reid was able to close out the rest of the game to earn the "W".
The offense for the Ice Dogs was on fire in this three game series, as they scored 14 goals on 137 shots.
The Ice Dogs improve to 33-15-3-3 with 72 points as they now hold a six point lead in the Midwest Division as Fairbanks extends their winning streak to five in a row.
The Ice Dogs prepare for their final six games of the regular season, which will be against their in-state rivals in the Kenai River Brown Bears.
Fairbanks will be on the road to face Kenai down in Soldotna for a Midwest Divisional series starting on Thursday at 7 P.M.
