FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks finished their weekend series against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers, splitting the weekend match-ups.
The Nanooks started the series with a 3-1 loss to the Charges, even though the first period looked promising with Kylar Hope tying up the score with goal off of passes from Tristan Thompson and Nikolas Koberstein.
However, in the second period, former Ice Dogs player Bauer Neudecker scored a goal for the Chargers.
Then Alabama Huntsville closed out the deal with another one in the third.
Alaska's offense out-shot the Chargers 44-17, but couldn't get more than one goal on Friday.
Then in Game 2, the Nanooks turned to freshman goalie, Gustavs Grigals, to lead the last line of defense, and it paid off.
Grigals held off with 29 saves and only gave up one goal to the Chargers as the Nanooks won 2-1.
Tristan Thompson got the first goal off of a pass from Steven Jandric, but Alabama Huntsville answered back in the opening period.
It wasn't until the third period where the Nanooks got a game winner from Steven Jandric with passes by Chad Staley and Antti Virtanen.
Grigals spoke after the game about their victory over the Chargers.
"I think we played pretty good on defense," started Goalie Gustav Grigals; "and guys blocked a lot of shots. And I just kept playing my game. It's great to win first game in here in our arena and I think our next games against Lake Superior State we will keep playing hard and win those games too."
