“To be honest, it was nerve wracking at first.” said Talo. “I got the interview during the day and then I got an email, ‘Give me a call.’ I was like, ‘Oh no, what happened?’. The next day came along and they were like, ‘Hey so we’re going to offer you the varsity spot.’”
Talo takes over a program that hasn’t been to the Alaska state tournament for volleyball since 2008. For the new head coach, she is still getting her bearings about the new gig.
“I don’t know, I’m still thinking that it’s a dream right now.” said Talo. “It’s a dream to be part of a program that can actually excel girls from middle school. It’s going to be an experience.”
When asked if she has told her friends and family about becoming the Malemutes’ head coach, she responded with this.
“I didn’t tell them. I told my husband, but then I haven’t told the family yet. So I guess, surprise.”
Lathrop opens their season on the road against the Hutchison Hawks on August 27.
