FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Last night the state championship tournaments began for High School Volleyball, with two of our interior teams vying for a state title.
The 2018 state tournament for volleyball has seen upsets, dominant net action and star players rising to the occasion. Here is full look at Day 1 for the 3A/4A Brackets down here in Anchorage. First we have the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves taking on the Grace Christian Grizzlies. The Grizzlies showcased why they are one of the top teams in the 3A circuit, sweeping the Braves and winning the sets 25-14, 25-15 and 25-16. They moved onto the second round, while the Braves moved down to the consolation bracket for the double-elimination tournament. Next was the Nome-Beltz Nanooks taking on the Monroe Catholic Rams, which saw the Rams pull off the 3-1 victory over the Nooks. Fairbanks' own came alive on the defensive end to put away Nome, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-22. Nome tried to fight back, taking the third set, but Monroe closed the deal 26-24 in the fourth. Up next was the Homer Mariners taking on the Valdez Buccaneers. After the Bucs dismantled Homer in the first set 25-10, the Mariners proved to be difficult, taking the second set and playing tough in the final two. Valdez won 3-1. And the last 3A bracket first round matchup had the Nikiski Bulldogs facing the Barrow Whalers. The Bulldogs fell in the first set 25-22, but were able to secure the final three 25-17, 25-22 and 25-13. Nikiski pulled off the upset over the powerhouse program. Now we look at the 4A bracket, and we start with the Wasilla Warriors taking on the South Anchorage Wolverines. Wasilla was a top seeded program coming into it, but the Warriors couldn't hold back South who won the match 3-1. Wasilla was down 2-0 early on, but failed in their attempt for a reverse sweep. Next was the Colony Knights going up against the Dimond Lynx. Dimond is the tournament favorites, and they showed it with an eye-opening sweep. They won the sets 25-16, 25-3 and 25-6 as Alissa Pili and the Lynx rocked the Knights. The West Valley Wolfpack faced the Soldotna Stars in a five set thriller, while the West Anchorage Eagles swept the Thunder Mountain Falcons to advance to the second round. In the second round, the Eagles were able to pull out the 3-1 victory over SoHi, but faced a challenge in the final two sets. Meanwhile Dimond wrecked South to sweep their conference rivals. Then in the 3A bracket, Nikiski took down the defending state champs, beating Valdez 3-1. And the Monroe Catholic Rams faced off against the Grizzles and were swept. They lost the sets 25-11, 25-21 ad 25-17.
