FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The North Pole Patriots are the number one seed in the Mid-Alaska Conference tournament after getting multiple wins over the Lathrop Malemutes and West Valley Wolfpack.
"I'm like really excited, because we want to take it home this year," said North Pole's Ainsley Smith. "It's perfect it's at our house, this is the team. The parents are all here, we have the support. It's our year."
North Pole 3-2 West Valley:
The Patriots have had big performances from players like Ainsley Smith, and North Pole as a program are only one game away from the Alaska state tournament North Pole opened up with a quick 2-0 lead against the red and gold. Ainsley Smith led the Patriots with 25 assists, while Alivia Himebauch chipped in 12 kills.
North Pole was dominant through the two sets, but West Valley wouldn't give up on Senior Night. The Wolfpack won the third and fourth set in their own dominant fashion to tie it up at two apiece. West Valley was led by Pam Noll with 11 kills and 20 digs, while senior Kenya Pulgarin had 23 digs.
The fifth set however saw the Patriots win 15-3 over West Valley.
"To remember that we are a family, that we need to go as one." said Smith "That really hit us, because we all looked at each other and were like, 'yeah, we are together. This is who we are, without each other we are just individual girls in knee pads.' Playing together made us that team."
The Mid-Alaska Conference Tournament is set to start next week on November 6 at North Pole High School with Lathrop facing West Valley in the first round. The winner will take on North Pole on November 8 with the winner of that going to the Alaska State Volleyball Championships.
