FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball program have started practice as they prepare for the 2019 season.
"It's been a lot of fun in the gym,” said Alaska Nanooks Head Coach Brian Scott after seeing his team come together. “Our competition level has definitely skyrocketed this year. I feel like we're really working hard. It's just going to be fun to be able to get out in front of some fans this weekend and to be able to compete. It always makes it a little bit more game like. Girls get kind of hyped up about going out there and doing it so excited for Blue and Gold."
The Nooks took fourth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference last year, and they added more talent under Brian Scott. The Nanooks added Colleen File, Eden Murchison, AveRee Reynolds and Sophie Schilling. These new players are excited to get on the court for the upcoming season.
"It's been super fun,” said newcomer AveRee Reynolds. “We have a lot of girls in the gym that are very talented and very good. Just challenge each other and make each other better every day.”
One of the new players, Sophie Schilling, comes from the same country as current Nanook, Lahra Weber. That happens to be Germany, but to Schilling she is just excited for the opportunity in Alaska.
"I'm so excited, because it's so far away,” said Sophie Schilling. “I think Alaska for me is the best place to do volleyball and to be because I love the winter. I'm so excited. Yeah it was so good. It's another spirit here than in Germany because it's more emotional and I love that, because everyone is fighting for every ball. Everyone is loud and it's a great team. Yeah, I love it."
This Friday the Nanooks host the Blue vs. Gold game to showcase the team in an inter-squad match-up. That will be at 7 P.M. at the Patty Center on Friday.
