FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) In the depths of December, the high school hockey season is well underway. As the Aurora Conference schedule unfolds, the Hutchison Hawks took on the Monroe Catholic Rams at the UAF Patty Ice Center on Tuesday.
Commanding all three periods, the Hawks trounced the Rams 11-4, behind a strong offensive performance.
Josh Bronson was having his way, scoring four goals and generating an assist for five points on the night. Corbin Layral joined his teammate Bronson in the five-point club, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on three scores. The Hawks also saw two goals from Dominic Ermi, while Alex Shahan, Skylar Victorino and Sierra Lesniak each had a goal in the victory.
"It felt really good [to score] but then they announced Dylan Bailey got a goal and I got an assist, but I was like 'you know what, it's still teamwork,'" Lesniak said after the game. "It's really nice when the whole team comes together and plays as one. We've been playing really good the past two games and I'm really surprised we've came together."
Monroe, the Greatland/Division II State Champions from 2016-18, got a pair of goals from Miles Fowler, while Lane Lannet and Dom Coiley also found the back of the net. Jordan Higbee denied 32 shots in the net for the Rams, while Andrew Farmier had 24 saves for the Hawks in the win.
Hutchison will take on the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors at UAF at 5:45 on Thursday, while the Rams will face the Lathrop Malemutes at the Big Dipper at 3:15 on Friday.
'Pack blank 'Mutes
Once a combined program, as recent as just last year, the West Valley Wolfpack and the Lathrop Malemutes now have their own teams and took to the Big Dipper Ice Tuesday night.
The West Valley Wolfpack earned their third win of the season anchored by Luke Hartman's 18-save, shutout performance. With four different players scoring goals, the Wolfpack would go on to defeat Lathrop 4-0. It did not take long for West Valley to set the tone, as Alex Wuttig would pocket an unassisted goal just 17 seconds into the contest to ignite the scoring. Dylan Glynn had the lone score in the second period, putting away a power play goal to make it 2-0. Kenny Sjodin and Coen Wood closed the door on the game with a pair of goals in third period, giving the Wolfpack the victory over their cross-town rivals. West Valley will host Chugiak at the Dipper at 5:30 on Friday, after Lathrop takes the ice against Monroe.
