FAIRBANKS, Alaska - We start today with an amazing moment for the Fairbanks community, as one of our own received his letter to compete with Team USA in the World Special Olympics.
And that man is Demiko Colbert, who has had an impressive 2018.
At the Special Olympics meeting for the bowling season, the representatives from the Alaska office brought Demiko up to bask in the roar of applause.
Colbert has been very active this summer, as he competed in the National games claiming silvers in the 100 and 200 meter dash.
Colbert is going to be part of history, as this will be the first time the Special Olympics will be played in the Middle East.
Team USA will be playing those games in March, as it will be in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates.
Sarah Arts spoke on the importance of getting to witness this moment.
Sarah Arts:"Last week was our 50th anniversary for Special Olympics and that was when the first international games were held in Chicago and being able to see the change that's happened over the last 50 years. For me it's only been 10 that I've been a part of it. It's just an amazing movement to see it grow to this global organization after getting its humble beginnings in Kennedy Shiver's backyard. So having an opportunity to send an Alaskan to the very first world games in the Middle East is very exciting for us."
Demiko Colbert will be leaving the Golden Heart City here soon to Delaware to participate in the Team USA training camp before the World Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi.
We wish Demiko all the luck in the world as he represents Fairbanks, Alaska and Team USA in these games.
