FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The 2019 Ice Jam tournament has started off with a bang, as two of our Interior teams have reached the semifinals after taking care of business on Day One.
We start with the West Valley Wolfpack who played against the Eagle River Wolves.
The Wolfpack went right to work against them, blowing their opponents out of the water from the get go.
They won 66-12, as Ellen Silva led them with 14 points on the night.
In the first quarter, West Valley were up 22-1 and by the midway point of the second the Wolfpack switched in their backups against the Wolves.
They will take their momentum into a semifinal matchup against the Bartlett Golden Bears tonight at 7:30 p.m. at West Valley high school.
Earlier in the day, the Lathrop Malemutes took on the East Anchorage Thunderbirds and had to storm the near comeback made by the T-Birds.
Lathrop won 41-39 over East, as they were led by Ella Roberts and her 14 points, but it was the late game heroics of Torrin Johnson Oates that helped the Malemutes to their opening round victory.
Johnson Oates finished with 12 points on the night, and the Malemutes survived the fourth quarter against the T-Birds, who scored 13 in the final frame.
Lathrop will now prepare for their semifinal matchup against the ACS Lions.
The Lions are a 3A powerhouse and the Malemutes will have their hands full against ACS.
This game is slated for 6 p.m. tonight.
