FAIRBANKS, Alaska. (KTVF) Basketball season is upon us with games starting here soon. This year’s season preview starts with the West Valley Wolfpack.
The red and gold girls' program are heading into another season with Head Coach Milo Griffin at the helm.
"Well I think some of the younger kids are working really hard,” said Coach Griffin. “Some of the upper classman now looking back and helping them out so that's bonding them together just a little bit more and being the under-dog this year is going to help us a little bit fight a bit harder."
This year's team is looking to replace big time contributors in Ellen Silva and ‘Cece’ Tate who both moved on to UAA. The Wolfpack made the state tournament last season, and they are looking to make it back this year.
"Well we have a lot of potential too,” said Senior Sheridan Blasey “Everyone being young and everything and they're willing to learn to get better. Everyone works really hard."
The boys' program is now in year two under Head Coach Colten Growden.
"I think it's exciting for everybody. Basketball is four and a half months and then it's sit around and wait,” said Coach Growden. “Here we have a very dedicated group. Kids come and spend a lot of time in the off-season getting shots up and working on conditioning and getting up and down up the court. Now it's finally time we get to put it all together and go display what we got."
The team picked up a big-man for the post and returns a lot of the same players that took the program to the state tournament last season. One of those players is Terrell Peter who has been a defensive stalwart for the red and gold.
"We're feeling good we have a new player Javon,” said Peter. “He's going to be a big help for us this year. Last year we struggled with no big-men. We have a lot of talented players this year. We're looking a lot better than last year. I have high hopes for us this year."
Both West Valley programs start their season with an endowment game against the Monroe Catholic Rams on December 20 at home.
