Alaska ended their 10-game losing streak, and took down their five-game streak of futility against the Saints that dated back to January 20, 2018.
"One of the things we focused on was challenging each other to be better,” said Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto. “I think today, when that team shows up, we got a lot more wins in us."
The Nooks won 82-73 as they pulled away in the fourth quarter. Jocelyn Gandara led the team with 28 points and 8 rebounds, while Brittany Richards chipped in 17.
“The fact that we focused on our spacing. We knew our roles, and we knew what we had to do.” said Gandara.
Down the stretch, Richards came up clutch for Alaska hitting shots and free throws to get the much needed win.
“We have so much talent. I think this coach is focused on the heart,” said Richards. “It's so good to see this game, we worked really hard.”
It is also the first time the women's team has had two GNAC wins in a season since 2017.
The Saints outscored Alaska 58-41 in the second half. Shadeed Shabazz led the Nooks with 29 points and 7 steals.
Alaska struggled as a team from downtown going 6-25 for 24%. The Nanooks drop to 7-5 in the conference and they are tied for third with Western Oregon and UAA.
