FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Airmen gathered on July 10th to hear the story of Technical Sergeant Trevor Brewer, who survived a terrorist attack in 2011 at the Frankfurt Airport.
Brewer said that sharing his story helps with the healing process.
"March 2nd, 2011, is when I left for my deployment, and that's the day my life changed forever," said Brewer.
Brewer survived a terrorist attack in which he saw his friends get shot and killed on the same bus he was riding. He now shares the story about his struggle with post traumatic stress disorder.
"There are a lot of people going through a lot of different things... and if I can just help one person that's been through something similar... or by [hearing] me talking, then they come forward and seek the help they need... that's worth it to me. And that's why I think it's important," said Brewer.
Brewer has participated in a variety of wounded warrior sports events including wheel-chair basketball and seated volleyball. He says one of his favorite parts is interacting with other wounded warriors.
"It gives you a whole new perspective on life… guys that are missing arms and legs… people who have been through very traumatic situations. And they make the best of it. They live every day as if its their last day, they enjoy life, they really get out there and give 100% in everything that they do. It's really inspirational to me, and gives me a whole new perspective," said Brewer.
Brewer believes that sharing his experiences not only helps the airmen, but it helps himself.
"I've been doing pretty good [at] these events… to be able to tell my story and interact with other people… [to] tell my story, and hear their story... that really helps me. I think that's some of the best medicine you can have… just talk about what's going on," said Brewer.
When he is not at wounded warrior events, Brewer is a security forces flight chief at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
"But ever since March 2nd, 2011, I have treated every day like it's my last — in honor of Airman Cuddeback, and Airman Alden. Again I'm Tech Sergeant Brewer! I'm an Air Force wounded warrior!" said Brewer.
