FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The non-profit Santa's Helpers is in need of volunteers this holiday season for its annual toy drive.
The Santa of the group, Bill Hunt explained what volunteers are needed for, “We need volunteers to come in and sort all of these toys and then put them into individual bags and then we need people to come in around the 14th and 15th to build family bags. We need people to come in and answer phones, to verify all of the information that we have received,” he said.
All toys, books, and other goodies have been donated by the community - and at the end of the toy drive, those items will be given out to families in need.
The organization currently has about 1,000 toys but the goal is to receive about 3,000 more, in order to serve 350 families.
On Sunday December 16th, drivers will go all over the Interior to deliver the donated toys.
Fairbanks Nissan is helping as well, clearing out its show room to house the donations. Owner of the dealership, Lester Nichols said it’s great to be a part of.
"Christmas is that time where everybody's helping out everybody else, we're supposed to be sharing and giving to each other. When people are down, they need a little help and this is a great organization,” he said.
To refer a family to receive a toy bag, or to sign up to volunteer, you can call 457-1934, Monday through Saturday, between noon and 6:30 p.m. Toys can be dropped off for donation at Fairbanks Nissan on South Cushman.
