VISTA Looks to End Poverty in the Interior

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Fairbanks has new volunteers that came from all over the country to help our community.
Americorps VISTAs.
The purpose of these volunteers is different than other Americorps programs.
They do not provide hands-on service, instead they work behind the scenes to build programs.
The VISTA's mission is to work towards eliminating poverty.
They are volunteering around town at different organizations like the DOOR, the Boys and Girls club, and Breadline Inc.
The DOOR was an organization that benefited from VISTAs in previous years.

"When that program started they were having youth in beds in the basement of a church," said Brittany Smart, the Borough Mayor's Special Assistant; "and by the time the VISTA project was done, they had a building, they had policies and procedures in place, and they had a safe location for homeless youth to go."

These eight VISTAS will work on these projects for the whole year - Hoping to build a program that will last after they leave.
