FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The University of Alaska Board of Regents held a meeting on 10/31 to discuss topics related to student affairs.

The topic of interest in this board meeting was program assessments at the university. As budget reduction is still a concern for University of Alaska institutions, the committee now has to look at ways to reduce costs within the academic programs. An increase is online classes and distance education was discussed along with the reduction of classes.
In the next upcoming months the committee will focus on modification, reduction, suspension, or elimination of majors and classes based on the assessment of the effectiveness. The criteria that universities will be using in these reviews according to University of Alaska president Jim Johnsen include cost, productivity, centrality to mission.
“There may be programs that we’ll be asking you to consider deletion that have been core to our universities for many, many years. So I think what I’d like to remind you all would be to keep engaged with the process to follow the processes. It’s going to be processed in terms of where we are in the process,” said Paul Layer, University of Alaska Vice President.
All UA Universities will provide proposals for deletion or major revision in degree or certificate programs to President and VP on March 23rd, 2020.
