FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Three candidates are running for Borough Assembly Seat G, Leah Berman- Williams, Hank Bartos and Michael Holland. We sat down with them to hear what kind of direction they want for the borough. Candidates for Assembly Seat G told us how they think deferred maintenance should be handled in the borough.
Berman-Williams said, "I hope they pass the proposition that makes there be space outside the constraints of the revenue cap, to help maintain our buildings, because this is a problem that has been building for a long time. One of the reasons it's been building, is that we just don't have quite enough money to do all of the maintenance we need to do for our buildings."
Holland said, "I think one of the biggest things we got facing us is what we're going to do with just our economic situation. We have a lot of updates that need to happen with buildings and things, and we don't exactly have money coming in, so we need to find a way with either tourism or some other industry to start revenue coming in for the borough so we can afford to do all the stuff we need to get done."
Bartos said, "The borough has 128 buildings, and that includes the school district buildings that we have to keep up with and manage, and we need to do it on an orderly fashion. We can't just ignore it because it's certainly not going to go away, and it's not going to get better with time."
The newly elected assembly member will start on October 29.
