Three West Valley students injured in swimming incident; West Valley football preseason activities suspended

Fairbanks The following is the press release by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District:

NEWS RELEASE - July 27, 2019

Three students required medical attention resulting from a swimming accident that occurred at the University of Alaska Fairbanks pool yesterday evening. At approximately 7:30 pm, all three students were transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment and overnight observation.

The school district is committed to the physical and emotional well-being of our students. West Valley administration responded to the hospital and have been in contact with parents of the students involved.

As of noon on Saturday, one student had been released from the hospital. The other two students continued under medical observation. We are grateful for the continued care of our athletes at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

All West Valley High School football preseason activities have been suspended until further notice. West Valley High School administration is conducting an investigation of this incident under guidance from district administration.

Crisis response support is available for student athletes affected by the incident. Information about how to make use of the services has been shared with the families of student athletes present at the Friday night activity.

The district was notified that the UAF police department is also conducting an investigation.
