Small wildfire reported near Birch Lake

FAIRBANKS, Alaska Firefighters responded to a small wild fire near Birch Lake yesterday.

According to the Alaska Division of Forestry, the fire was reported around 8 last night and a helicopter brought five firefighters to fight the blaze. Firefighters hiked about a mile and found a small fire smoldering in black spruce. The helicopter was then used to drop water on the fire.

Nine more firefighters were brought in this afternoon to assist with suppression and mop up. The fire has burned a half acre approximately 7 and a half miles east of Birch Lake and 55 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
