Hi my name is Heather Ritchie and I’m with the Fairbanks North Star Animal Shelter -- and today we have some guinea pigs. We have 4 of them. 2 of them, Biscuit and Zeus, came in together. The other two, Blade and Cedric, did not come in together but they’re all doing really well together.

Cedric is 6 months old, Blade is a year and 6 months, and Biscuit and Zeus are both one-year-old. Guinea pigs also live for about 7 to 8 years so if you want to adopt them it’s going to be a commitment for several years.

They are all pretty good at being handled. They all enjoy their greens and everything every day. Guinea pigs require pelleted food, measured and non-pelleted food, daily grains and constant timothy hay. Biscuit and Zeus came in to the shelter kind of malnourished, so they’re going to need all that extra food and extra vitamins to make sure they stay healthy.

Zeus has a slightly deformed leg. It doesn’t hinder his ability to play with other guinea pigs though, he’s doing really well. Guinea pigs are really fun pets to have, they’re really interactive and they really enjoy being able to get out of their cage and have fun every day.

The guinea pigs also have other friends at the shelter that are waiting for adoption. We have some more guinea pigs, a rabbit and lots of dogs.
