North Pole man sets car on fire with lighter

NORTH POLE, Alaska Alaska State Troopers responded to a car fire in North Pole early Saturday Morning.

According to court documents a passing motorist called A-S-T after seeing a vehicle fully-engulfed in flames on the corner of Bradway and Badger Road.

Troopers were able to locate the vehicles owner and a passenger Thomas Hernandez. Hernandez told police he did not know how the fire started but stated there was a gas can in between the head rests and the car was full of items from the transfer site. The vehicle's owner stated Hernandez was trying to spark a lighter for a cigarette.

Hernandez was charged with Reckless Endangerment for starting the fire while the owner was driving the vehicle.

Thomas was taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Facility.
