New overpass planned for busy Fairbanks intersection

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Members of the Department of Transportation discussed upcoming changes to a congested intersection in Fairbanks. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting this afternoon, Transportation Manager Matt Stone gave a lecture on the proposed change to the intersection at Gaffney Road, Airport Way, Richardson Highway and the Steese Expressway - known as 'GARS'. According to Stone, the intersection is currently the fifth most dangerous in the interior and the second busiest.

Carl Heim, an engineering manager with DOT Fairbanks, explained that the Steese and Richardson will go over and Airport and Gaffney will go under. Construction on the overpass is expected to start in 2021 and last two seasons. The project will also close the left turn onto 10th Avenue from the Steese.

The public can give their comments on the DOT website under the GARS project page.
