National Wear Red Day kicks off American Heart Month

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Friday, February 1 is the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day to kick off American Heart Month, where people all over the country are wearing red to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke.

In Fairbanks, residents like Wendie MacNaughton and Lisa Herbert, are celebrating the day with red. They are also at the ahead of this year’s Go Red for Women Conference and Luncheon put on for American Heart Month.

"Heart disease and stroke are claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women, so when you think about it, that's a third of mothers, friends, sisters, wives, women in this community are being impacted by heart disease and stroke,” Herbert said.

MacNaughton added that American Heart Month was started by the American Heart Association 10 years ago to inform women, and help eradicate heart health issues. Over the 10 years of this campaign, over 50 percent of women have been helped when it comes to being heart healthy. Both MacNaughton and Herbert agree it's all about thinking towards the future.

"I'm a mom. I'm a wife. I'm a friend. I've had lots of family members be effected by heart disease and stroke. When I think about getting involved in supporting an issue like the American Heart Association and funding that research. I want to be here for my kids and I want my kids to be there for their kids," Herbert said.

"Yeah I feel the same for me and what Lisa said it's pretty hard to find somebody that hasn't been impacted by heart disease. We have heart disease in my family. It's impacted a lot of my friend's lives and so I think it's really all around us and I think it's a really important cause and I'm happy to be a part of the change,” MacNaughton added.

To spread the message of being heart healthy, the American Heart Association in Fairbanks will be holding a Go Red for Women Conference and Luncheon on Friday, February 15 - with breakfast, health screenings, and guest speakers. The event will be held at the
Carlson Center located at 2010 Second Avenue; Fairbanks, AK 99701 and will begin at 8:30 a.m. It is estimated that 600 residents will be in attendance.
