Mayor's Appointment Sparks Gas Board Drama

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Later in the Borough Assembly meeting, Patrice Lee's seat on the Interior Gas Utility board became the subject of intense discussion.
The seat was already vacant because of Aaron Lojewski's assembly win, and Lee was excited about the prospect of stepping in before her term officially starts in January.
But Borough Mayor Karl Kassel appointed IGU volunteer consultant Bob Shefchik to fill the seat until then.
Despite several of Lee's supporters saying they felt it would be more appropriate for her to fill the seat, the assembly voted 5 to 4 to support Shefchik's appointment.
Although Lee was disappointed in that decision, she says she'll still work to get up to speed on IGU business before her term begins.

Patrice Lee; IGU Board Member-Elect>>I will ask to able to attend executive sessions, although that is not likely, it's not a given. But I think when it comes down to it we all will have to respect the fact that the mayor and certain assembly people thought that Mr. Shefchik had the only special knowledge needed to make the votes between now and when I take my official seat."
