FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A program empowering young women through science, art and wilderness exploration is now accepting applications for its 2019 expeditions. This program is called ‘Inspiring Girls Expeditions’ and it aims to incorporate young women into field science careers.
According to Program Coordinator Sarah Clement, the program began as ‘Girls on Ice’ in 1999 in the North Cascade Mountains in Washington state. This summer the program will be offering eight different expeditions to be held in Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Canada and Switzerland. This program is open to high school girls who will be 16 and 17 years old on June 1, 2019.
The application period is open now but those interested will need to register by Friday February 1st. Applicants will then have up till Friday February 8th to submit all application materials. Clement said it's about providing a path to success for these students.
"We are 'Inspiring Girls Expeditions' because we believe that creating a supportive environment for girl identifying youth in traditionally male dominated fields like the sciences and outdoor pursuits is critical to the success of these girls later in life pursuing their passions,” she said.
She added that the program is tuition free, however applicants will need to pay a portion of travel costs to and from the travel site. The program is also run through the College of Natural Science and Mathematics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
