HEALTH WATCH: Can painting lower your blood pressure?

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In this week's health watch, we took a look at one of the leisurely activities here in Fairbanks that can help with stress.

There are various activities that you can do to lower stress levels. Giving yourself a moment to decompress and letting your mind be distracted by focusing on a hobby, can benefit your mind, body and emotional state. Paint-Nite events are opportunities to explore the art of painting. Rows of canvases lined up next to each other as artists dressed in lime green aprons and listened to Paint-Nite instructor, Brittney Cameron. Cameron spoke about the key elements to a successful night out.

"Just relax and have a good time. It's part of our Paint-Nite oath. We say it a few times at every event. You're going to create something amazing, but the biggest thing is to relax and have a good time, try something new," she said.

Studies from the American Institute of Stress show that hobbies like painting can lower blood pressure, depression and give you feeling of accomplishment.

"It's so important, I think, to take some time for yourself, whether it's just an hour or two at Paint-Nite. Even if you have never painted before, you're a little nervous when you get here, by the end almost everyone is relaxed having a good time. So, it's a lot of fun, for me too," she said.
