FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Governor-elect Mike Dunleavy will be sworn in above the Arctic Circle, marking a first for Alaska. According to the Associated Press, Dunleavy will officially become governor on December 3 in Noorvik, a small village more than a thousand miles from Juneau that's only accessible by boat and plane.
Dunleavy's wife grew up in Noorvik, so they chose that location out of respect to her family and their "fond memories" there. AP reported Dunleavy saying,"For us, it is the right thing to do - to call attention to the beauty, warmth and spirit of a part of our state many Alaskans have not experienced."
