FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Friends of SS Nenana held an open house Tuesday at Noel Wein Library in hopes of gaining more volunteers and interest in saving the SS Nenana, an historic stern wheeler currently showcased at Pioneer Park.

They had historic documents, refreshments, and activities for children at the open house. Many members of the Friends of SS Nenana have special historic ties to the boat, so they're trying to raise money to save it.

Carolyn Loeffler, a volunteer for the Friends of SS Nenana, said they are hoping to partner with the borough to keep the stern wheeler preserved for future generations.

"Honestly, the hard work's already been done. The ship has been brought ashore. It's in a public place. There's plenty of parking. It's already well loved and well visited and our goal is to make sure that that can continue into the future," she said.
