Fairbanks ski & snowboard operation offers discounts for 2020 season

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) Fort Wainwright is offering discounts to civilians as well as military members and their families this season for Birch Hill Ski & Snowboard Area. According to Eve Baker, the Community Relations Specialist for the Public Affairs Office on Fort Wainwright, these discounts are due to some changes that the base is planning for the facility.

"The reason for this is we’re looking to make some changes at the lodge over the next couple of years," said Baker. "We just want to get people motivated and reassure them that it's open for business for skiing and snowboarding and tubing. We're offering a significant discount on our season pass and our day pass. That discount is available to, not only the members of our base community but those off post too."

According to Baker, Blue Star families, which are families with a deployed service member, receive an additional discount.

Lessons are available for those just starting out and the outdoor recreation facility near Glass Park rents gear.

"We start making snow around the 1st of November," said Baker. "I know it's crazy to think that you have to make snow in Alaska, but we supplement the snowfall with man-made snow."

Baker says ski season normally starts the weekend after Thanksgiving.
