According to charging documents, Kelly Sweetsir was seen stabbing her and then dragging her body. Troopers received calls about the attack, when emergency responders arrived they attempted life saving measures. Reed was pronounced dead inside the ambulance at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital parking lot. She had 14 stab wounds to her abdomen, back, face, hands and arms.
Witnesses said they heard Reed yelling for help in the garage and saw Sweetsir standing over Reed with a knife. They fled the residence and said that Sweetsir was dangerous.
Witnesses said Sweetsir was fleeing the area on foot. They later received information that he was at his home off of Goldhill Road taking a shower. Troopers surrounded the house and after a 30 minute standoff, Sweetsir surrendered.
According to charging documents, two witnesses said that Sweetsir was schizophrenic and has not taken his medication since June. They also said they tried to get him involuntarily committed to the hospital for mental health issues but were unsuccessful.
Sweetsir agreed to speak with troopers and admitted to the murder. He told troopers that voices in his head urged him to kill Reed and that he felt in danger because, "She had a blurred face, and the ability to replicate people's voices and faces when taking dark photographs." He also said that he tried to stab Reed in the heart but that she might not have a heart, and that he stayed to make sure she didn't come back to life.
Sweetsir was arrested and arraigned in court on Saturday.
Sweetsir has previously been arrested for theft, vehicle theft, assault 4, weapons misconduct and drug related charges. Including an incident in 2017 where he attempted to outrun police in a stolen car after he attempted to use stolen ATM cards.
Sweetsir's next court hearing is scheduled for August 20.
