Fairbanks Celebrates Halloween: Activities to do this holiday

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Halloween is just a few days away but many will start to celebrate the holiday this weekend.

Many places around town are gearing up for the holiday, including Fairbanks City Hall. When Mayor Jim Matherly first took office he want to create a community event to interact with the public.

“When I got here in office I wanted to have at least a trick or treat thing so folks can bring their kids and come down themselves to city hall, which is really owned by the people anyway,” he said.

Dressing up and handing out candy, this will be the third year City Hall has celebrated the holiday with the community, "Kids love to come to my office and see what will the mayor give them and I'll have some good treats for them,” he added.

If your children prefer science, the U.A. Museum of the North also has a Halloween offering. According to Museum Director Patrick Druckenmiller, this year staff are bringing all of the museum’s collections upstairs to show visitors a variety of exhibits.

“Whether they be bugs, bats or dinosaur bones like the things behind me," he said, adding he will be working on dinosaur bones on the 31st. A can of food for the food bank gets you into to see all of the collections at the museum that night.

At the Fairbanks Children's Museum, kids can enjoy crafts all day. Museum Educator at the Fairbanks Children’s Museum Hailey Lavin explains what families can expect.

“We're going to be having dimmed lights to make it a little spooky but not too spooky we're going to have crafts in the art room and we're going to have water beads and we're going to have paper plates that actually allow kids to make jack-o-lanterns and candy corn,” she said.

The Fairbanks Children's Museum will also offer a story time and craft about the book read at 11 a.m and at 3 p.m. kids will be making slime.
