FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) The Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Fairbanks '2019 Artist of the Year,' Katie Ganley with a showcase this First Friday.

Ganley received this honor through the Artist of the Year contest, which provides the opportunity to be showcased to thousands of residents and tourists. Additionally, her artwork is also featured on the Chamber's marketing materials throughout the year.

Katie Ganley is a stay at home mother and artist who's had a recent fascination with painting after taking a 2 day watercolor class. Saying she had no idea she was good at it until she started trying.

"I started painting almost two years ago now and basically on the anniversary when I started painting, was the Chamber of Commerce meeting where they did the artist of the year and it was really cool, it was not at all expected," said Ganley.

She describes her personal style of art as “chaotic”.

“Just kind of like my life. I just really like to focus, you know, a lot of them are animals so I like to focus on the details of the animals but then make the surroundings or something in there kind of draw you in and come out at you," said Ganley.
Ganley says the painting is her way to encourage the younger generation that they can achieve goals and that art is not as hard as one might think it is.

"As far as my art goes it wasn't nearly as hard or scary to learn how to do this and I would encourage kids and adults that haven't tried it to just learn the basics and go from there," said Ganley.

Currently Ganley is working with a Fairbanks author to illustrate a children's book and hopes to debut her illustrations sometime in the near future.

The showcase at the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce Office will be on Friday, September 6th at 5 pm, and her display will mostly feature Alaskan wildlife and as she calls it, "good old fashioned chaotic artwork".
