FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In just a few short years, the Fairbanks North Star Borough will see an influx of military personnel as the F-35s make their way to the Interior.
Eielson Air Force Base will be receiving two squadrons of F-35 fighter aircraft by 2022, however some airmen have already arrived.
In anticipation of this increase, a Regional Growth Plan has been created to help prepare for the new additions.
The plan focuses on a variety of issues including employment and health, with an intense focus on housing and education.
A major part of the new population will be children.
Project Manager Shelly Wade said work with the district is well underway.
"We've worked a lot with the superintendent and her team to think about how the school district and how the schools are currently, what capacity they're at and how can we meet the need of this young population of 17 and under coming in with the incoming population," she added.
The deadline for public comment on the Draft Regional Growth Plan is July 31st.
