FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As part of 'National Community Planning Month', the American Planning Association's 'Great Places in America' program recognizes streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the United States that demonstrate exceptional character, quality and planning. The American Planning Association has recently named Cushman Street as one of five great streets on the organization's annual Great Places in America list. The group says that the redesign of the street has revitalized downtown's core, spurred economic development, and improved the safety and quality of life of residents and visitors.
"We do hope that it attracts more businesses in downtown, and it's tourists that visit our downtown have a more pleasant experience and use the facilities that we constructed. But it provides good access to the existing businesses, and we hope new businesses move in and so that this can really be a destination for people when they visit," said Jackson Fox, executive director of the Fairbanks Metropolitan Area Transportation System.
In addition to Cushman Street, the American Planning Association recognizes the following Great Streets in 2018: East Cross Street in Michigan, Fayetteville Street in Raleigh, North Carolina, State Street in Bristol, Tennessee, Bristol, Virginia and West Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas.
