FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A new wholesaler has finally opened its doors in Fairbanks. After Sam's Club closed just a few months ago, Costco's grand opening has been a long awaited day for many.
Dozens patiently waited outside Costco's doors - some longer than others, ready for the moment they finally open.
Thomas Thornton was the first person in line - all for the chance at a slice of cheesy goodness, “I came up here yesterday at two in the afternoon. Just wanted to make sure I came and got the first pizza out of the oven," he said.
After a warm welcome from the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, the crowd quickly filed into the new building ready to explore the newest addition to the interior.
Membership Marketing Manager, Brad Boyer was there throughout the morning as well helping residents get signed up for a day of shopping.
“We're excited this is opening day. We're all happy to be here the community has been amazing. We've really enjoyed getting to know so many people and we're happy that everyone now gets to shop today,” he said.
From basics like toilet paper and other house hold goods to clothing and electronics, the opening of this new wholesaler in Fairbanks was a happy day for many, especially for Keegan Tomaszewski.
"My parents are small business owners, they've actually been driving down to Anchorage to buy their supplies from Costco so this is going to save a lot on gas,” Tomaszewski said.
Helping small businesses and providing over 270 jobs to local residents, Costco has already made a huge impact on Fairbanks.
The store had special hours Tuesday, but will normally operate Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
