The donation, which occurred on Wednesday, May 27th, contained about 36,000 pizza shells, and 300,000 dinner rolls and sub sandwich buns.
Chartwells manages dining services at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The effort constituted a partnership between them, Rich’s Manufacturing, and Odyssey Logistics.
According to Tyler Newell, Executive Chef with Chartwells Dining Services, the goal of the donation was to help the community, especially at the current time. “We felt that was a really important thing to do, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic and all that is happening in the world today,” he said.
Chartwells has worked with the food bank since the company’s operations in Fairbanks began. Newell explained the reason behind having FCFB as the recipient of the donation, saying, “They work with a lot of smaller organizations throughout the interior of Alaska, and we felt that they were a good way to reach as many people in the community as possible that were in need.”
According to Newell, Rich’s Manufacturing managed to gather the food and get it from California to Seattle, then Odyssey Logistics was in charge of moving it from there to Fairbanks.
But having pizza shells is only half the battle.
“They’re still gonna need some cheese and some pizza sauce for that, and of course they always need volunteers to help package the food and distribute the food and that sort of thing. So any time that anybody has to spend to volunteer with the food bank is greatly appreciated. And if anybody has any spare cheese or pizza sauce they would appreciate that as well,” Newell said.
The Fairbanks Community Food Bank always accepts food donations -- and during the month of May, the food bank is working with other organizations around town to bring awareness of child hunger with the May No Child Go Hungry campaign.
