Coat drive ends in success, benefits community

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The 2018 United Way Coat Drive co-sponsored by Madden Real Estate, Walmart and our station, ended this week with a surprisingly large amount of donations provided by the Fairbanks community. As the waiting room of the United Way filled with bags of donations, more and more kept coming as the day went on. Walmart General Manager, Kiel Wendelschafer says he was impressed with how the community responded to the call of action.

Everything from boots to scarves were donated, with sizes ranging from infant to adult. According to Ariel Gallemore of Madden Real Estate, this year's event brought in more items than the previous year. Jacqueline Evans used the coat drive to show her daughters the meaning of helping the community.

"This is at least double from last year, so we've had people donating every single day for at least about a month, now," said Gallemore.

"Well, for my girls, they just get so much for themselves. I want to teach them that they can also help others out. Hopefully, it will teach them to appreciate more of what they do have and what they can give," Evans said.
