FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Public Works Department of the City of Fairbanks is offering something extra with its garbage service during the holidays, Christmas tree pick up. Public Works will be collecting trees starting January 10 and will provide the seasonal service for about a month with Thursdays being the pick-up days.
Labor Supervisor with Public Works Sean Rice said residents should remove all lights, ornaments and other decorations from trees before putting them out to prevent obstructions in the garbage trucks. In years past, Public Works has attempted to repurpose the trees, but this year, they will be going to the landfill.
“This year we're bringing them up to the landfill because in the past when we tried chipping them a lot of the people missed lights or ornaments and it really tore up our chipper whenever we tried chipping up the Christmas trees," Rice said.
Garbage truck drivers will be looking for houses that have their tree out or residents can call Public Works at 459-6770 to be put on a list for pickup.
