Retiring Fairbanks Police Chief Eric Jewkes was given a special honor today when he received a traditional Athabascan chief’s necklace to honor him for his service to the community.

Darlene Nicholia, of Tanana, made the necklace and presented it to the Jewkes at the FPD station today. She says the necklace is traditionally given to chiefs who are retiring to honor them for their bravery and loyalty.

Nicholia has known Jewkes since 1986 and says he has done much to help the native community.
