Good Samaritans pull family from burning truck after head-on collision

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) Multiple emergency agencies responded to a head-on collision on Farmers Loop Road around 9:45 Thursday night. According to Alaska State Troopers, Ashley Sortman, 28, passed a vehicle in a no passing zone and collided with a Toyota Tundra.

Calls to 911 reported that there were people alive in a burning vehicle. AST Sergeant Melvin Colley said that the Toyoda Tundra caught fire. Before help could arrive, good Samaritans used fire extinguishers to help douse the flames and pulled the five victims out of the truck.

Two of the victims were released from the hospital, while three were medevaced to Anchorage for further treatment. Sortman was pronounced dead on the scene and next of kin have been notified.

Sergeant Colley praised the actions of the citizens saying, "Just want to thank [them] for stepping up and helping the family of five. I believe without their actions that we definitely would have had more than just the one fatality."

Troopers say an investigation is ongoing.
