FAIRBANKS, Alaska. (KTVF) Mayor Bryce Ward delivered the proposed budget on April 4 and budget ordinance 2020-20 has since gone through the budget process with the borough assembly and finance committee. Now, the borough wants to hear from the residents.
Public testimony will begin at or after 6 p.m. on Thursday, and the meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.
"It's important for them to know that they still have a voice in the budget process and that the assembly does want to hear what the public has to say about the budget process and what's within the budget," said Borough Clerk April Trickey.
Members of the public interested in providing public testimony need to sign up with the borough clerk's office by calling the office at 459-1401 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday or by using an online form on the borough assembly’s website.
Trickey says residents do not need the internet to participate; they can use a landline or a cell phone number for the borough’s office to call you on to give testimony.
“But since we are calling you through the Zoom application, it will not be a number that will come through your phone if you have caller ID, it’s going to be another phone number, and just realize it’s not a telemarketer, it is your borough clerk’s office calling you to bring you into the meeting to testify,” said Trickey.
Citizens can continue to sign up using the online form during the meeting until public hearing is closed. Trickey says they will continue public testimony until it is finished.
“We do typically have to end our meetings by 11:30 p.m. so if testimony continues at that time, the assembly would have to decide whether or not they want to suspend their rules to continue to complete testimony that evening or reconvene to the May 14 time at 6 p.m.,” said Trickey.
According to the borough, the budget must be adopted by May 31 of each year.
