FAIRBANKS, Alaska. (KTVF) A Fairbanks restaurant was broken into early Saturday morning, and thousands of dollars of alcohol was stolen.
Fenders Restaurant near South Cushman Street was broken into, and co-owner Corey Boyd says 90% of their liquor bottles were stolen.
Boyd says he found out about the break-in around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. One of their managers arrived to Fenders to find the door smashed, and notified Boyd about it. By the time Boyd got to the restaurant, the police were on scene.
Boyd says the most noticeable damage was that their liquor cabinets were broken, along with the majority of the liquor bottles being gone.
“We’re tearing it apart so we can rebuild it now, and we’re going through seeing what else is missing. We keep noticing little things here and there,” said Boyd.
Boyd says they have the suspects on their security camera who were at the restaurant between four and five a.m., adding there were several individuals.
Boyd says they did not grab every bottle of alcohol, but the suspects took almost all of them. “Pretty much the bottles that were left are the ones that had the pour tops on them. They would have just spilled all over everything, [so] unopened bottles were pretty much all taken, other than just a couple,” said Boyd.
Boyd says he did not see something like this coming. “The building owner, one of his places got broken into the night before. [I] found out when I called to let him know that the building was broken into. He said his place had been hit ,and he had told me before that they used to have an ATM that was in the entry way... and they stopped putting it there because people broke in and hooked a chain up to the ATM, and dragged it out. But I never pictured anybody breaking in. Especially [with] all the liquor they stole, there was no reason for them to smash the glass out on the cases. They could have just gone around to the other side and grabbed all the bottles without breaking everything,” said Boyd.
Boyd says Fenders has been open for takeout and delivery, but was hoping to reopen to dine-in for Mother’s Day. They will now have to push that date back.
